Genealogy (May 2013)

A few months ago, I provided photos of headstones in the Armenian section of the cemetery on Lower Circular Road in Kolkata. I was aware that Armenians used to have a large presence in Kolkata, but I thought that they were rare outside of that (except, of course, in Armenia) and that it would therefore be a waste of my time to provide more photos.
Then, a few things happened. The first was that a reader wrote to me saying that he was happy to see the names of a few of his ancestors and other note-worthy people in my post. Secondly, I remembered that I went to High School with someone surnamed "Tashjian" who was apparently proud of his Armenian heritage. Thirdly, at Wells Fargo, I had a client surnamed "Nahapiet" who said that he was from Denmark (and he probably was, since he knew the language). From these photos, though, I surmise that his more-distant family was from Armenia. Lastly, and very recently, I saw the Armenian Church and several Armenian names in the nearby Catholic Church in Chennai. Thus, it seems that the Armenian diaspora is quite extensive, and I hope that more people can benefit from these photos.
With these photos and with the December 2012 post, I have taken photos of most, but not all, of the headstones in the Armenian section of the cemetery. I considered returning to the cemetery at a later date to take more photos, but then something else happened. In doing nominal research for this post, I came across this website by Liz Chater. It was obvious that she has done far more research than I have and has a more vested interest in it. Thus, if you have any questions or concerns about Armenian relatives or ancestors not only in Kolkata but also anywhere in India, or if you want to provide more information, then it may be more productive to contact her. Her email (according to the website) is liz@chater-genealogy.com.
I shall continue these genealogy posts, but those shall be of headstones not inside the Armenian section.
As I have done before, I apologize for things both within and outside of my control. The first is that of the photographs themselves. I took them at a time when the sun was rising, and at an angle when my shadow often fell upon the tombstones. I suppose that I ought to have taken them when the sun was setting (so that my shadow most likely would not have been shown), but it is even hotter in the early-mid afternoon, and the sun sets relatively early. (By 6:00pm, it is dark.) The second is that of the age for Mack Martyrose. I can not explain or nor even understand the age. My best guess is that he was born on 11 July 1884, which would make his age correct, but how can anyone mix-up the years 1884 and 1895?
