1 July  Just thirteen years old and already a landmark, and already obsolete.

2 July  No, this article is not about Kolkata, or India, or relevant to the U.S. but I am nevertheless posting this here because Caroline is an enormous fan of Enter the Dragon and, strangely enough, I read this article the morning after she asked me to find out more about the actor who played Mr. Han (who lived to be 96 years old!).

7 July  A history of New Market in Kolkata

9 July  Wow! The death of the telegram (see below) and of AltaVista, both in one month. Many years ago (several years B.G.--Before Google), a friend introduced me to AltaVista. I, like most other people, used it until Google came along. Nevertheless, it is sad to see it go.

14 July  I agree with the international amusement parks. Admittedly, I have not been to Essel World which, according to Wikipedia, does match up to international standards, but I still doubt that it offers the thrills that those in the U.S. and elsewhere offer. In a previous post, I mentioned that the ride commonly called "Viking Ship" (and "Columbus" in Hyderabad) goes 360° several times in the United States, but no more than 90° in India.

15 July  Continuing stories of the death of the telegram (1, 2, 3 4 5 6 7 8)

17 July  An interesting concept, but probably not realistic (cf Esperanto)

20 July  Ever since I arrived in India, I have been fascinated by 1) foreigners in India who come here  to stay. Such people are Bob Cristo, Jean Dreze (who has become a naturalized citizen of India), Katrina Kaif (who was born in Hong Kong to a Kashmiri father and English mother), Imran Khan (who is the nephew of the damous actor Aamir Khan and was born in Madison, Wisconsin) and others; and 2) "foreigners" in India who were actually born here. Such people are Tom Alter (who was born in Uttarakhand to American Christian missionaries), Kalki Koechlin (who was born in Tamil Nadu to French parents), and now Jillian Haslam (who was born in Calcutta to British parents who stayed after Independence). Her story is quire inspirational. Here is a follow-up article.

22 July  No, this really has nothing to do with either Kolkata or India, but since I reviewed both films (1, 2) and am looking forward to the former's sequel, I thought that I should comment on this article. First of all, it seems strange to me that they should be antagonists and secondly, is this really a fair fight? In TDKR, Batman gets beaten up by a human (albeit a powerful one). If Batman has difficulty against a human then what chance does he have against a superhuman?

22 July  In a few of my posts, I bemoaned the increase in obesity in India. This is further evidence of that observation.

25 July Last month, I mentioned that Prince William is descended from someone in India. Now, it seems that Joe Biden may be related to someone in India.

28 July  After the death of Pran, there were many articles extolling his legacy. Here is another one.

28 July  For a long time, I have been an admirer of S.S. Aiyar. When I was active on Orkut, I joined the Swaminomics community because I thought that his weekly columns were remarkably astute. (Unfortunately, there is no such community at Google+.) This is a good example of his writings.

29 July  In the newspapers of San Francisco (and presumably everywhere else), if something happened in the United States (or anywhere else) then there would almost always be a local angle. For example, if a plane crashed in Minnesota then the newspapers would report on how many San Franciscans were victims. In the linked article, is a local (Kolkata) angle to the announcement of the royal baby. Here is a follow-up article.
